To the editor:
The Journal has been publishing articles about Oprah Winfrey's unsuccessful attempt to purchase a $38,000 purse at a Zurich, Switzerland boutique.
The discussion has centered on the racist attitude that the clerk may or may not have had.
My question is: Did Oprah really need another purse? Is a single purse a wise use of $38,000? What kind of purse costs as much as many people's homes? What values did Oprah display in her anecdote? Do you agree or disagree that a purse can be worth an average person's yearly income?
