NEW ULM - You could call them the BB Core Bombers.

Jarin Spence blasted a fifth-inning grand slam and Matt Rowley added two doubles as New Ulm VFW Gold pounded out 13 hits en route to a 14-4 win over Delano Friday night at Johnson Park.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run lead rule.

Gabe Knowles got the complete-game win for Gold. He scattered seven hits and fanned five.

Nate Meyers took the loss for Delano. He was charged with eight runs in his four innings of work. Jason McDonald was tagged with the final six New Ulm runs.

Alex Stark, Spence and Rowley each had three hits. Spence drove in four runs with Rowley driving in two runs.

"We came out a little flat tonight," New Ulm coach Derek Wilfahrt said. "I think that maybe we had a hangover from last night's game but we got the job done. We wanted to get out of here in five (innings) to save some pitching and we did."

New Ulm took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Luke Irmiter walked and stole second. The first of two consecutive doubles by Rowley gave Gold a lead that they never lost.

Gold sent 10 men to the plate in the third inning, scoring six runs.

Knowles, who reached base in the first inning on an error, singled to center field to reach base in eight straight at-bats to start the tournament. He raced to third on a passed ball before a Stark base hit scored him. A Spence base hit sent Stark to third. A stolen base and an error made it a 3-0 lead. Two wild pitches added two more runs before a second Rowley double and a Connor Forbrook groundout increased the lead to 6-0.

Brandon Beranek's base hit scored Rowley for a 7-0 cushion.

"Stark has been hitting the ball all year," Wilfahrt said. "And Rowley has been getting used to that designated hitter spot. If he gets it going, we are pretty solid one through nine in the line-up."

Delano scored two runs in the bottom of the third before Gold scored a single run in the fourth on a Stark single, an error and two fielder's choices.

New Ulm then essentially ended the game in the top of the fifth with another six-run outburst.

Rowley walked and scored on Beranek's double. Knowles walked with Stark following with a base hit to load the bases for Spence.

Spence then worked the count to 1-1 on reliever Jason McDonald came with a high outside fastball.

Spence knew what to do with it, sending it over the fence in right field for a grand slam and a 13-2 lead.

"I took it the other way," Spence said. "I watched it go over the ivy which is pretty cool. This is my first home run here and my first grand slam ever."

An infeld single from Rowley added the final run for New Ulm.
