NEW ULM - An unfamiliar name is atop the leaderboard at the 53rd Annual New Ulm Invitational after Saturday's first round.

Greg Tuttle (69) of Montgomery sits atop the leaderboar of the Championship Flight, one stroke better than three-time champion Johnny Larson (70). Jimmy Fromm (71), Ben Morgan (71) and Dan Wenner (71) are next followed by Steve Pribyl (72).

Although he's one stroke down, Larson finished strong on the first day.

"I played real good the back nine," he said. "I had a couple of struggles in the front, other than that I hit the ball real good all day."

Larson had a three-year run from 2007-2009 in which he won the event. New Ulm native Jon Herzog won the event in 2010 and Brian Regan won it in 2011. Last year's champion, Matthew Bakkum, did not register for this year's event, so there will be a new champion.

This is a perfect opportunity for Larson, a Springfield native.

"I want to try to keep the momentum going on the back nine," Larson said. "I got 31 on the back and I hit the ball real good. I struggled out of the gate but after that I played real good."

Andy Metzen is the leader on the first flight with a 75 and Darrin Bunkers is next with a 78.

Andy Budahn leads the second flight with a score of 79. He enters Day 2 one stroke ahead of Curt Bain (80). Tom Steinbach is five strokes ahead in the third flight with a 77 and Rob Geistfeld is second with an 82. Zach Geistfeld is next with an 83.
