NEW?ULM - The New Ulm City Council gave Denny Warta permission on Tuesday to construct through his own funding and display in City Hall a wooden model of an obelisk monument he wishes to locate in New Ulm to commemorate the service of Minnesota soldiers who served in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War.

Warta wants to display the model to determine if there is enough support to move forward with the 8-feet, 4-inch monument, which features murals with information on each of the four sides. He acknowledged that the proposed monument must be approved by city officials and meet requirements before construction would be allowed. Warta has a donor willing to fund the entire project, but he declined to name the door and the estimated cost of the project.
