NEW ULM - Although its very early in the season, the New Ulm boys tennis team certainly has the look to be a competitive team in the South Central Conference.

Josh Koelpin competes at number three singles during New Ulm’s tennis match against Fairmont Friday at NUHS.
The Eagles looked strong at some spots Friday against South Central Conference foe Fairmont, but New Ulm lost 4-3 to the Cardinals.
While a close loss early in the season is usually a tough pill to swallow, the Eagles (1-1) aren't too disappointed yet.
New Ulm's Alex King lost a tough match at first singles, falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). The Eagles and Cardinals split the singles competition, but Fairmont took two of three from the doubles side.
"Our No. 1 singles, Alex King, had a tough match and he lost in a tiebreaker," New Ulm coach Peter Engeldinger said. "He felt that he was a little out of his game. But our No. 2 and 3 singles and our No. 1 doubles were really solid."
New Ulm's Calvin Collum earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over J.T. Vesselman at No. 2 singles and Josh Koelpin picked up a 6-1, 6-0 quick victory over Tyler Heat at No. 3 singles for the Eagles.
Isaiah Johnson and Nic Gartner picked up the other Eagles victory when they won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
New Ulm is at New Prague on Monday.
