PREP BOYS' HOCKEY: Eagles dominate Cardinals

February 22, 2013

NEW ULM - For the first two periods of the New Ulm Eagles boys' hockey team's Section 3A quarterfinal game against Redwood Valley Thursday, the Eagles had fired 34 shots on Cardinals goalie Amadeus Jesinghaus.

The final 17 minutes of the game saw New Ulm get just one shot on goal - that lack of shots by design - as by then New Ulm had mounted a 10-0 lead as it rolled by Redwood Valley 10-0 at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Brandon Helget and Blake Neumann each came away with a hat trick. Neumann now has a team-high 27 goals, while Helget, a sophomore, has 21 goals.

New Ulm’s Josh Cooper (18) gets past Hunter Breidenbach of Redwood Valley during the first period of the Eagles’ Section 3A playoff win Thursday at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Judd Davis, Colin Huffman, Collin Kral and Ethan Kraus each scored a goal.

Chad Ludewig, Wyatt Peterson, Huffman and Jon Kopacek each had two assists with Davis, Mitch Neid, Ryan Busch and Alex Stark each getting a helper. Peterson now leads the Eagles in assists with 33.

New Ulm goalie Brach Kraus stopped all 12 Redwood Valley shots and now has 626 saves on the season.

New Ulm, now 13-12-1, will face Hutchinson Saturday at 8 p.m. at Gustavus in a Section 3A semi-final game.

For New Ulm and coach Erik Setterholm, the blueprint for the game was to dominate Redwood Valley (3-14) from the drop of the puck.

"Our game plan tonight was to go and get after them early, play our hockey game in the first and second periods," Setterholm said. "We wanted to take them out of anything that they wanted to do. We did not want to give them any sense of being in the game."

Three goals in the first few minutes of the first period and seven more goals in the second period will do that.

Judd Davis, Ethan Kraus and Brandon Helget got the puck by Jesinghaus in the first 3:53 of the game for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles then scored seven goals in the last 12 minutes of the second period for a dominant 10-0 lead going into the final period.

A goal by Neumann was followed by Kral's third goal of the season.

Neumann's second goal of the game, two goals from Helget in a span of 21 seconds and Neumann's third goal of the contest made it 9-0.

Huffman's sixth goal of the season at the 14:28 mark upped the lead for New Ulm to double digits at 10-0.

"I told the team after the first period that we had them down and now we needed to take them out," Setterholm said. "They did just that in the second period."

Up 10-0, Setterholm said that he played just his third and fourth lines in the running time third period.

"We gave them some ice time," Setterholm said. "They have not played very much, so it was nice to see them get ice time."

It was a period where the Eagles had just one shot on goal, that again by design. And the easy win means that New Ulm should head into Saturday night's contest healthy and fresh.
