GIRLS BASKETBALL: Tigers defeat Trojans

ST. JAMES - Springfield won the opener of the St. James Holiday Tournament by defeating Worthington Thursday afternoon.

Jordan Salonek led the Tigers with 23 points and six rebounds. Megan Pierson finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Kasey Kretsch finished the game with 12 points and six assists for the Tigers.

Paige Grabenhof led the Trojans with 20 points.

Springfield (5-4) plays Rockford at 7:45 p.m. tonight in the championship game.

GFW 50, New Ulm 34

WINTHROP - Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated New Ulm in nonconference girls basketball action Thursday.

Eve Bleick led the Thunderbirds with 20 points and Alex Jensen scored nine. Halley Busse finished with eight points.

For New Ulm, Alley Grejtak led the way with 12 points. Ellie Schneider ended up with seven points for the Eagles (0-7).

New Ulm hosts Fairmont at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4. GFW (3-6) is at Springfield on Friday, Jan. 4.

JCC 80, MVL 77

ST. CLAIR - Jackson County Central held off Minnesota Valley Lutheran, handing the Chargers their first loss of the season Thursday night at the St. Clair Holiday Tournament.

The Chargers were led by Anna Munsen, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Nicole Moldstad finished with 13 points and Mariah Schoof scored 12 points. Larissa DeRousse scored 11 points and Martha Johnston finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Chargers.

Lydia Brandt had 21 points for JCC and Kaylee Burmeister had 19 points.

MVL (8-1) plays Canby in the consolation bracket at 7:45 p.m. tonight.
