NORTH MANKATO - Teacher and union leader Robin Courrier, of North Mankato, announced Wednesday she will run for Rep. Terry Morrow's newly vacated House of Representatives seat.
Courrier will seek the DFL endorsement in the race for House District 19A. She said she was urged to run by the DFL party and her close friends.
"Part of my jumping in is that I have always been a big supporter of Terry Morrow and the issues he supports. I wanted to make sure there was somebody there to step in where he left off," said Courrier.
Courrier has been in education for the last 28 years. In the last seven years, she has held the role of lead teacher at Bridge Community School, which is a combination administration and teaching position because the school has no principal.
She is the president of the Mankato Teachers Association, the Mankato teachers union. She also serves on the governing board of Education Minnesota, the statewide teachers union. Additionally, she is on the resolutions committee for the National Educational Association.
Courrier's announced platform focuses are education, health care and job creation. She said she would focus on upcoming legislation on teacher evaluations and repayment of the school funding shift. She also plans to make the long-sought four-lane expansion of Highway 14 a major priority.
She declined to go into details about her positions on other issues. She plans to meet with Morrow and Sen. Kathy Sheran (D-Mankato) Thursday to learn more details about the issues before forming her positions.
Courrier is the first candidate to announce a run for the position. Allen Quist, a Republican who had an unsuccessful run for Minnesota's 1st Congressional District in November, said he was seriously considering a run. The Independence Party of Minnesota has two potential candidates.
Due to Morrow's resignation from the Legislature, a special election must be held to fill the seat. Gov. Mark Dayton has not yet announced any date for the special election. The election must occur within 40 days of Jan. 7, 2013. the official last day for Morrow.
