NEW ULM - Eva Karremann, the 2012 Hans Joohs Cultural Exchangee from Germany, bid farewell to the residents of New Ulm on Tuesday at a going-away event at Kegel Klub.
Karremann plans to travel to New York City today to spend a few days before meeting up with her incoming family. Shortly after that, she will return home to Ulm.
She said she had a fun and exciting time in New Ulm, and that she would highly recommend the trip to anybody in Germany. She said she thoroughly enjoyed learning and getting used to American culture, such as the excessive use of ice in all drinks and the presence everywhere of air conditioning. Her favorite experiences were seeing how locals represented German culture during the Oktoberfest, dressing up for Halloween and attending a Vikings football game.
During her stay, she worked in the human resources department at the New Ulm Medical Center. In Germany, she works for the human resources department at the University Medical Center of Ulm. She plans to take managements techniques she observed here back home to share with her colleagues. Her favorite was giving awards to employees for exceptional work, which she said is an easy but powerful motivator for a positive work ethic and coworker bonding.
"It was really great being here. It was a very special opportunity for me," said Karremann.
