NEW ULM - The Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL)?High School Onyx Knowledge Bowl team placed second at the Class A State Class Knowledge Bowl Tournament this week at Cragon's Resort in Brainerd, with 120.5 points.
New Ulm High School's Knowledge Bowl Team Purple finished eighth, with 101.5 points.
The Minnesota Valley Lutheran Onyx Knowledge Bowl team placed second at the Class A State Class Knowledge Bowl Tournament this week at Cragon’s Resort in Brainerd.

Thursday evening, MVL Onyx scored 49 points in the written round, which placed them in third place at the start of the oral rounds Friday morning. After the first oral round they were in seventh (60 pts), and then worked their way up to fourth after the second round (73 pts), stayed in fourth after the third round (84 pts) and advanced to second after the fourth round (104 pts), finishing in second place with 120.5 points.
New Ulm High School's Knowledge Bowl Team Purple's eighth place finish capped a very successful season.
Before going to state, the team also earned a first place finish in the sub-section tournament at MSU-Mankato and a second place finish at the Region 9 Tournament.
Approximately 850 teams from 11 regions compete in Knowledge Bowl every year. The top 48 teams coming out of those regions are split into two classes. Each class has 24 teams compete for their respective division championship.
The 2012 Class A champion was St. John's Prep and the Class AA Champion was Chaska Red.
Other Region 9 schools competing in Class A were St. Peter High School, finishing 15th with 94.5 points, and Montgomery Lonsdale, finishing 16th with 94 points.
