NEW ULM - The City of New Ulm will be participating in two statewide tornado drills on Thursday, April 19. Sirens will be activated at 1:45 p.m. and 6:55 p.m. Residents should be made aware that these are only drills and not actual emergencies.
Afternoon Tornado Drill 1:45 p.m.
This statewide drill will occur at 1:45 p.m. Jurisdictions across Minnesota including New Ulm will sound outdoor warning sirens. Schools, businesses, hospitals and other organizations are encouraged to conduct a tornado drill at this time to practice tornado sheltering plans.
Evening Tornado Drill 6:55 p.m.
The sirens will again be activated at 6:55 p.m. This evening drill will allow families and second-shift workers an opportunity to practice tornado sheltering plans.
The drills are part of Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week, April 16-20, an annual public event that provides a reminder of the importance of planning ahead for Minnesota's severe spring and summer weather.
