I am going to agree with "Silverfish" with a part of his/her posting about people beating down the door for a coaching job. You couldn't pay me enough to be a head high school coach! The crap that head coaches put with from parents, and even some players is unreal.

I am good friends with an Athletic Director at a school is SE Minnesota. He said he is lucky to get more then three applicants for a head coaching vacancy. He said very seldom do the lower level coaches even apply as they see what the head coach goes through and wants no part of it. He said you should see some of the emails, text messages, and end of the year evaluations coaches get even in his winning programs.

I understand Setterholm is fighting for his program, but I do agree with "viking fan" to use Jim's article to make direct comments to the board of EDUCATION is appropriate.

As mentioned in a previous posting, I am a "hockey supporter", but think Erik is really out of line here as well as Red writing these articles. It appears the articles are written to try and bully or intimidate the school board. If I were Chad Eischens I would have a little chat with my head boys hockey coach and tell him ENOUGH!

We need to keep things in perspective and remember this is an extra curricular activity at the high school level. Not college hockey, not semi pro, not pro, its HIGH SCHOOL hockey. Erik has done a nice job of running a competitive program, but we are not even close to the level of the elite programs which to many of my fellow supporters think we are only a power play away from.

Oh joy - more common sense in regards to New Ulm Hockey. As an area sports enthusiast - let me speak on behalf of thousands of people with a shred of hockey knowledge. If you are a New Ulm hockey supporter, please read this carefully...

You won't ever be good at hockey! You don't, nor ever will, have the resources to compete with the REAL high school hockey teams in Minnesota. I'm sorry you can't accept this. The New Ulm Public School is not a hockey training program.

Here's what you can do - re-evaluate yourself as a hockey town. Treat the Section like it's your own state championship and enjoy the beat-downs in St. Paul. If you REALLY were interested in beating the big boys, you would consistently hammer all of the teams in the Big South so that they decide to vote you out of the new conference in hockey. Then you can play your "very feasible" independent hockey schedule.

Yeah fire the coach for sticking up for his hockey program. I'm sure they would have lots of people beating the door down for that job. Get real vikingfan!!!

@brianiac - there are many more football teams than there are hockey teams. It's a poor comparison.

@vikingfan - I guess the coach doesn't get to voice his opinion? It's a school district not a military unit.

Who's running the school? The hockey program and its coach or the school board? Eric Setterholm might want to pipe down a bit or he might find himself out of a job.

So, just like adding New Ulm for football would be a huge step backwards for the entire conference? I hope New Ulm tries to demand an exception for hockey. Have fun driving to Warroad and Virginia for football games.

Seems like the easy solution would be to get an exception from the conference to play a separate schedule for hockey. Hopefully the school board does the right thing and holds ground on this important point. The coach is right, having to play a conference schedule in hockey would be a huge step backward.
