Of course Quist doesn't object to the agricultural handout portion of the farm bill, he has raked in a lot of money because of it.

Allan Quist is another perfect example of millionaires who have gotten rich through no hard work of their own. He also said he was going to retire from politics when he lost to Walz. It would be nice if he would keep his promises.

All these programs are "assistance" programs. Most of the people benefiting from the programs have jobs, but need these programs as assistance. The general idea with reducing these programs is to try to teach self-reliance instead of creating dependency. The more dependency you allow through constantly increasing these programs because there's a "need", the harder it will be to decrease or eliminate the dependent people. No one is saying let the children and elderly starve, certain legislators just want to make the system more efficient by cutting out some the waste (which there is a lot in both farm and food assistance programs).

twosocks: Where in Quist's letter do you hear him say that he opposes helping people who are in need of food? Just because he wants to separate the two issues into two bills, that does not mean that he wants to eliminate the food stamp program. Your comment attributes to Quist a position that he has not taken.

Noto... - If I understand your comment correctly, you are trying to say that Quist doesn't know what he's talking about. But I don't think your criticism makes sense. Those who receive SNAP are receiving a form of financial assistance from the public coffers. SNAP is by definition a form of welfare, whether the recipient's family has a job or not.
