Child Care Provider Appreciation Day

To the editor:

Since 1996, the second Friday in May had been recognized at Child Care Provider Appreciation Day. This is a day to recognize those who work closely with our small children as in-home daycare providers, child care center staff, and preschool teachers.

It takes a special type of person to be able to care for young children day after day and sometimes their work can be taken for granted. Many providers are dedicated to their job and spend countless hours nurturing children, teaching them social skills, and engaging them in educational activities. After putting in those long hours, providers will spend extra time attending required trainings in the evenings and preparing activities for the next day.

Specifically in Brown County we see the critical role providers also play in the local economy with the current child care shortage we are experiencing. Without providers, some parents are not able to return to work after starting a family. Others may choose not to accept a new job in a community that lacks sufficient child care. Businesses may choose not to expand to a community that does not have adequate child care for their employees.

On Friday, May 12th please take an opportunity to thank a child care provider for all they do and for the important role they play in the lives of young children.
