Keep Fairfax funds in Renville County

To the editor:

I live in Fairfax and am confused and have concerns on why the Fairfax EDA or Fairfax City Council would have interest in Fort Ridgley’s golf course, which is located in Nicollet County and not Renville County.

For those of you on the Fairfax EDA Board and on the City Council, Fairfax is located in Renville County and let’s keep our funds in our City. I understand some people may want to save a historic site but since it is the Nicollet County Historical Society that oversees it shouldn’t they be the ones you approach on working with the DNR on a way to save the Fort Ridgley golf course and not the City of Fairfax or the Fairfax EDA? If they don’t want to save it why should we?

My question to the EDA Board and the City Council of Fairfax is: How is going into another county strengthening and diversifying the economy of the City of Fairfax? Do I as a resident want to support a golf course and another bar? ABSOLUTELY NOT! You first need to improve what we have before you venture into something that is not in our City or County.

As a taxpayer, I am very upset that the EDA Board and the City Council is looking at taking Fairfax funds and relocating them into Nicollet County along with adding another bar for the city to run. I’m sure this one will turn a profit, NOT! So to quote Marcia Siebert Volz when she commented about the DNR’s decision “This is asinine.” So please tell me how can the City Council and Fairfax EDA Members justify using funds for something outside our City, yet alone our County?

Just once instead of one group contacting Senator Andrew Lang and him running to their aid I would like Senator Andrew Lang to knock on a door ask what do you think about this issue going before the Minnesota State Senate? I would encourage Senator Andrew Lang, Minnesota State Senators and the DNR Director to inquire with the residents of Fairfax how they all feel on this issue before they continue on with it. Don’t just try to save a golf course, tell us at what cost would it be to the taxpayers to save it. Stop wasting taxpayer money and do what’s best for our community. If the majority in Fairfax wants to take on this responsibility and the cost then I will accept that but if we don’t can you people trying to push this issue accept that? Is it possible some issues should be put to the voters before the City Council or Minnesota State Senators make a decision that we just have to accept and pay for over many years yet to come!?!?
