Thumbs Up/Down

Is it getting hot here?

THUMBS UP: Or is it just New Ulm? With the Star Tribune Magazine declaring New Ulm this week to be one of the “5 Hottest Small Towns” to visit, we can expect to see an influx of bon vivants and hipsters, looking for some “hot” New Ulm atmosphere.

If plans to create a distillery in the former New Ulm Warehouse, Inc., building are successful, imagine how much hotter we could become.

Chamber change

THUMBS UP: The news hit Friday that Audra Shaneman, president and CEO of the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce for the past eight or nine years, will be leaving that position this month to become director of the Greater Mankato Growth organization.

Shaneman will be missed. She has provided an energy and spark to the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce and has guided it to greater heights. She has been tireless in promoting New Ulm, in improving what needs to be improved and in looking for ways to take the good and make it better.

We are glad she and her family will be remaining in New Ulm, where we are sure they will continue to be involved in community activities and happenings.

The Chamber of Commerce board will have a tough task finding Shaneman’s replacement. We wish her the best.

Decision time

THUMBS UP: Speaking of leadership changes, the New Ulm City Council and the Brown County Board of Commissioners have some big decisions coming up in hiring new leaders for our local governments. The New Ulm City Council will be interviewing finalists for the City Manager position on Monday, and could be ready to make a decision on Tuesday. The Brown County Commissioners will be interviewing finalists for the County Administrator’s post on April 10.

Local goverment boards will tell you the most important decision they make is to hire the chief administrator, the person they will trust to take care of the day to day business of the city, county or school board. A good hire will mean years of efficient operations and good service to the public.

Good luck to the City Council and County Board as they make their decisions this month.
