Our View: Trump: No one is lukewarm about him

Donald Trump was elected president in a time of great political divisiveness in America. He came along at a time when the presidency seemed to be controlled by Democrats, while Republicans ruled in Congress. Even his election was divisive — he successfully garnered the needed electoral votes, but lagged behind in the popular vote.

With his first 100 days behind him, Trump remains a polarizing figure. People either love him or hate him. No one is lukewarm in their feelings.

Last weekend the StarTribune published its poll on attitudes toward Trump’s first 100 days. About half the resondents disapproved of his performance, while 40 percent approved. If you look at the poll The Journal runs on its website, a totally unscientific survey of opinion, it flip flopped, but still divided. A little over 50 percent think he’s done a good job, 43 percent said he’s done a poor job, and only 6 or 7 percent think he’s done a fair job.

It’s true the country was deeply divided before Trump announced his candidacy. But it is hard to govern effectively with half a country’s support.

While we can’t blame Trump for the country’s great political divide, we have to say he hasn’t done much to heal it. He continues to take potshots at his enemies, which are everyone who disagrees with him. Democrats, Republicans who don’t support him, judges who rule against his administrative fiats and, of course, the horrible, lying, enemies-of-the-people media are all targets for his tweeting fingers.

Trump said in an interview with Reuters last week that the job of being president is harder than he thought it would be. Perhaps it would become a little easier if he stopped trying to put down his “enemies” and started working with them.
