Our View: Replace Obamacare with something better

Shortly before taking office President Donald Trump has promised to replace Obamacare — the Affordable Care Act — with something better. He said there would be “insurance for everybody.” He said it would be simpler and better: “Much less expensive, much better …lower numbers, much lower deductibles.”

The current House Republican plan, the American Care Act, doesn’t seem to measure up to that promise. The Congressional Budget Office has issued its report on the plan. While the CBO is by no means infallible, it works hard to be non-partisan, to look at the facts and give an honest analysis of proposed congressional legislation.

Here’s what the CBO said about the plan:

• On the plus side, the bill would reduce the federal deficit by $337 billion over ten years — by cuts in the federal-state Medicaid program for low-income Americans and eliminating the subsidies that help people buy insurance they couldn’t otherwise afford.

• It would result in 14 million fewer Americans with health insurance after one year, and 24 million fewer with insurance over 10 years.

• It would result in health premium increases by removing the mandate to buy insurance, resulting in fewer healthy people paying into the system.

Haste makes waste when it comes to this kind of legislation. If the Congress and the president want to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, it needs to take its time and come up with a better plan.
