Thumbs Up/Down

Legacy Dads

THUMBS UP: There have been a lot of examples this year about how not to be a father. Most notably, Adrian Peterson is learning that corporal punishment is not a great way to bring up kids, even if it is the way he was brought up.

A program that started in New Ulm this week, Legacy Dads, is hoping to teach fathers a better way, one based on being a loving and active father, one who teaches and shows children by example how to live.

The group, which had its kickoff event Wednesday night, has its first father and child gathering on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 7:45 a.m. in the DAC auditorium, 15 N. State St. We hope lots of dads and kids will show up.

Learning ethics

THUMBS UP: The New Ulm Rotary Club embarked on what they hope will be an annual event this week, also on Wednesday. Rotary sponsored a day-long program that gave 42 high school seniors intensive training in ethics – what ethics are, and how to use them in daily life.

Ethics are not something you just learn. They can be instilled, and strengthened with practice.

The hope is that these students will go back to their schools and homes and put what they learned into practice, effecting change for the better in their schools and the community, sowing the seeds of ethical behavior.

We wish the program success now and in the future.
