Moving in at MLC

THUMBS UP: The organized chaos of moving in to dorms is taking place at Martin Luther College this weekend. Freshmen moved in Thursday and Friday, and upperclassmen are arriving this weekend.

Any parent who has gone through the experience knows what mixed emotions are all about. There’s excitement and nostalgia and pride and protectiveness all mixed together. You’re happy your child is ready to move on, but worried about what can happen. You feel happy at having the nest emptying, but sad that your little baby is growing up. You hope that they will have a great new experience but hope they won’t leave you behind.

One thing parents can have is confidence that MLC will take good care of their students.

We’re glad to see the students coming back. It adds a lot of life to the community to have them here.

Garden of Hope

THUMBS UP: New Ulm Medical Center has officially opened its Garden of Hope, located just outside the Virginia Piper Institute Cancer Center. The garden has been planned as part of the Cancer Center’s expansion, and gives patients a place to draw hope and inspiration as they fight their disease.

Medical institutions don’t need to be sterile, bland environments, and the Garden of Hope is an example that a little medicine for the spirit can be very useful in creating better health.

Fun in the park

THUMBS UP: German Park found a new way to get families outdoors, offering an outdoor movie night this past Thursday. Kids and families and anyone who wanted could come and watch “The Lego Movie” on a big screen in the park.

The fun included kids games and a bounce house.

This is a nice, innovative way to get people together in the parks, and create some good memories.

Take care on roads

THUMBS UP: With schools starting up again, we wish to remind motorists to be aware of increased traffic around schools, to watch for school buses and obey their warning signs, and be alert for kids heading to school. To young drivers heading to school, please drive safely, and keep cell phones and other distractions put away until you get to your destinations.
