No 90s OK?with us

It was pointed out to us by National Service Weather watcher Victor Roepke that by his records, we have not had a 90 degree day yet this summer.

Come to think of it, it has been pleasant this summer, with little need to keep the air conditioners running full blast.

Hard work pays off for Hagedorn

In politics, hard work can pay off. Jim Hagedorn proved that this week when he defeated the Republican endorsee, Aaron Miller, for the right to oppose Congressman Tim Walz in Minnesota’s First Congressional District.

Hagedorn had conceded the endorsement to Miller at the Republican district convention and called for Republicans to rally behind him, but became concerned weeks later when Miller, in his opinion, had failed to get going on the business of campaigning. Hagedorn rejoined the race, traveled the district, made stops and ran a vigorous campaign. Miller seemed to be focused on fundraising, but was not as visible as Hagedorn

On Tuesday Republican voters in the district picked Hagedorn to carry their banner in the election. Hard work obviously paid off.

Disabled deserve chance to work

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton last week ordered state agencies to hire more employees with disabilities. He wants to more than double the number of disabled workers on the state payroll from 3.2 to 7 percent.

It is estimated that 20 percent of Minnesotans have a physical or mental impairment that limits their life activities. This does not mean that these Minnesotans cannot work, though.

We’re not sure we’re thrilled with the governor ordering the specific hiring of one group of people. Everyone should earn their job. But if disabled people are qualified, they should be hired.
