Service to Mankind

THUMBS UP: The New Ulm Sertoma Club presented its Service to Mankind Award on Thursday to Chris Rosenhamer. Rosenhamer has been honored for her many contributions to the community, especially her work as a charter member and volunteer for MOPS (Mothers Of Preschoolers), and as a volunteer and organizer with the CROP?Walk.

Congratulations to Rosenhamer, and thanks to the Sertoma Club for giving recognition each year to our unsung volunteers.

ISD 88 Hall of Fame

THUMBS UP: It’s such a good idea that you have to ask, “Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?” The ISD?88 Foundation and its Alumni Committee has started a District 88 Hall of Fame, and its first six honorees indicate the hall has a lot of potential.

Honorees to be inducted next September includes quite a mix. There are the nationally famous, like Wanda Gag, noted artist and children’s author, and Terry Steinbach, a successful major league baseball player and All Star now coaching with the Minnesota Twins. There are inspirational stories, like David Benson, who overcame his own disabilities to be an educator for children with disabilities. There are local contributors, like Joe Harman, a teacher and coach who founded the New Ulm Park &?Rec Program, and to whom Harman Park is dedicated. Kirk Gregg is successful in business, and Nancy Noyes Silcox, who made her mark as a Peace Corps educator and educator and librarian in schools around the world.

There are no doubt many more success stories waiting to be recognized.

Happy, safe holiday

THUMBS UP: We know it gets said every holiday, but it bears repeating for this Memorial Day weekend. Be safe. If you’re traveling, buckle your seatbelts, give yourself plenty of time to drive without rushing, and please don’t drink and drive. If you’re going to the lake, use your life vests and be careful in and around boats. Have a happy weekend and come back safe.
