“If you build it, they will come.” This famous line from the movie “Field of Dreams” now has new meaning in Minnesota, which was chosen to host Super Bowl LII (that’s 52 if you’re not Roman) in 2018 (or MMXVIII if you are Roman).

Minnesota is building a new stadium for the Minnesota Vikings in downtown Minneapolis, at a public cost of about half a billion dollars, and the NFL is granting us a great boon by letting us host the Super Bowl. It will bring a quick surge of money into the state’s economy and help brand Minnesota as a great, desirable place to be in February.

We doubt the Super Bowl’s injection of dollars into the state will make up much of a return on the investment, but it is an honor, and better than nothing.

Minnesota, and especially Minneapolis, will be recouping its investment in the jobs being created by the construction of the stadium, and the development around the stadium. We will also benefit from the absence of the nagging and threats to move the team the Vikings ownership have been using for years. The quiet is blissful.

Maybe the best thing about getting the Super Bowl for 2018 is that we beat out New Orleans, which thought it had it locked up. Serves them right for what the Saints did to Brett Favre in 2010 when the Saints knocked the Vikings out of Super Bowl XLIV.
