Press White House on Benghazi

Defenders of President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton deride every new attempt to get to the bottom of the September 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. Four Americans were killed.

A few days ago, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said he will establish a select committee to investigate the attack and its aftermath. Democrats responded derisively.

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said he may recommend that House Democrat leaders not appoint anyone from their party to participate in the panel’s work. The committee is “a colossal waste of time,” Schiff insisted.

It is true multiple revelations already have occurred about how the attack happened, why better efforts to rescue Americans in Benghazi were not made, and the State Department-White?House attempt at first to blame the assault on an Internet video critical of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

But more information continues to surface, little by little. Just within the past few days, a new memo came to light, making it clear the White House did not want to admit the truth about Benghazi.

Boehner is right. There still is much to learn about the Benghazi attack and what happened afterward. The new panel should press forward – with or without Democratic cooperation.
