Eagle Update: Jefferson Elementary Programs

Jefferson Elementary School is a child-focused primary school located at 318 South Payne Street. Jefferson Elementary School is a Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 primary school with an enrollment of approximately 625 students. For the 2013-14 school year, there are seven sections of kindergarten with 20-21 students per class, seven sections of first grade with 21-22 students per class, six sections of second grade with 23-24 students per class and five sections of third grade with 26-27 students per class.

In addition to serving students in Kindergarten through third grade, Jefferson Elementary also houses four different types of preschool programs.

Jefferson Elementary School offers a variety of experiences, focusing on the academic, emotional and social growth of children. Some unique opportunities for Jefferson students include a full-day, every day kindergarten program, Title I services for reading and math, two Minnesota Reading Corps members, an autism preschool and an autism 1-3 resource room. Students also receive physical education and music taught by specialists for 90 minutes weekly. In addition, media, computer, and art classes are taught once a week. Jefferson has a full time counselor and mental health professionals available to help families who need these services.

Jefferson staff are highly trained professionals who have been trained in best practices, current educational strategies and technology instruction. Jefferson keeps current with educational technology. Students have access to the following: every classroom has a Smartboard, computer stations, mobile laptop lab, iPads, and iPods.

Most Jefferson students have the opportunity to use the Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training (SMART) room. SMART connects fine and gross motor development to academics. Jefferson has implemented Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavior and Supports (PBIS) programs to provide a caring and safe learning environment for all students.

Several community members volunteer to come into to classrooms to work with students who can benefit form some extra help. These volunteers reinforce math by playing math games, read to or with students, share career information, and help in the library or cafeteria.
