Brown County Browser: National Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week

Brown County Browser

The week of July 16-22, 2017 is dedicated to pretrial, probation and parole supervision week. This year’s theme from the American Probation and Parole Association is Clients, Communities, Employees: Empower- ment through Partnerships. This approach is evident that our communities are made safe by involving clients, communities and employees. The best chance for long term change and a successful period of probation involves each of the prongs.

The probationer must be ready for change and be held accountable for their actions. They have to want to do the work that likely involves addressing counseling or treatment for chemical dependency concerns. The community is the local intervention and support system to address identified needs of the client. Brown County has excellent local resources to help offenders remain crime free. The employee is the Probation Officer who must be able to use their knowledge and expertise to guide each client to focus and change what got them into the corrections system. This triangle of success requires all components to work together in order to assist that client in improving their lives and thus reduce recidivism in our community.

Probation officers make our communities safer, it is just that simple. This work is sometimes completed in non-traditional hours and can be emotionally draining and demanding, but we do it because we want to improve the quality of life of our clients and want our communities to be safer for all of us.

The Brown County Probation Departments mission statement utilizes the multi-pronged approach “to promote public safety by holding offender’s accountable, providing victim and community reparation, and utilizing quality probation services.” We take our role to promote public safety very seriously and during this week of national recognition, we thank all our colleagues who provide services to those on probation making Brown County a safer place to live.
