Town Talk: City of New Ulm Animal Control

City of New Ulm Animal Control

The Animal Control Unit for the city of New Ulm is overseen by the officers of the New Ulm Police Department. They are tasked with maintaining the animal pound and the care of the animals in it, picking up stray and or lost animals, and investigating complaints regarding animals within the city of New Ulm.

The Animal Control responds specifically to calls regarding dogs and cats. The only animals that can be picked up and placed in the pound are dogs and cats. We do not have the facilities to care for other types of animals. Any animal placed in the pound will be held there for a minimum of 5 days, after which it will be taken to the New Ulm Regional Veterinary Center for a wellness check. From there the animal will be sent to the Brown County Humane Society for adoption.

When animals are picked up, a photograph and the location of where it was found will be placed on the New Ulm Police Department Facebook page. If you find a stray dog or cat, it must be contained (kennel, leash, box, etc.) before an officer will pick it up. If you are missing your pet, check the New Ulm Police Department Facebook page or contact the police department. If you see an animal on the New Ulm Police Department Facebook page and are interested in adopting it, contact the Brown County Humane Society.

Currently there is a $25.00 animal release fee that must be paid prior to the animal being released. This can be paid at the Law Enforcement Center and must be in cash. All dogs that reside in the city limits of New Ulm must have a city dog license. These can be purchased at City Hall and are $10.00 for the year. Dogs must have proof of current rabies vaccinations from a licensed veterinarian to obtain the city dog license.

There is a limit of three dogs per household within the city of New Ulm. There is no current limit on cats. Proper shelter is required for animals that are kept outdoors. These shelters must be of a suitable size for the animal, moisture and windproof and raised at least 2 inches off the ground (MN state statute 343.40). No animals, dogs and cats, are allowed to run loose in the city of New Ulm (city ordinance section 8.21). Currently the use of a live trap on cats or dogs is not allowed withing the city of New Ulm.

Any questions regarding animal control should be directed to Corporal Murphy with the New Ulm Police Department.
