Good news in SE

THUMBS UP: The news that the former Del Monte plant in Sleepy Eye may soon have a new owner is good news indeed. The plant closing last year after decades of operation in Sleepy Eye left hundreds of employees without work and the city without its major employer.

It was announced this week that Chasing Our Tails, Inc., a global pet treat manufacturer, has entered an agreement to buy the plant from Seneca Foods Corporation. Chasing Our Tails wants to reopen the plant for expanded packaging operations and new business lines. It plans to bring back 50 jobs in the next couple of years, a far cry from Del Monte’s heyday, but who knows where that may lead?

Court integrity

THUMBS UP: The U.S. Supreme Court, with its three members appointed by President Donald Trump, showed it is not Trump’s Supreme Court on Friday, when it rejected a lawsuit filed by the Texas Attorney General and joined by other Republican states in an attempt to overturn the results of the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Twice this week the Supreme Court refused to get involved in the election. It is willing to let democracy and the election process work unhindered by partisan and personal desires and ambitions. The voters made their wishes known, and dozens of challenges have been struck down by lower courts. The Supreme Court is not going to change their decisions.

Democracy may not be perfect, but it has worked for the past 232 years in America. It is working today, and the Supreme Court is letting it work by maintaining its independence and distancing itself from partisan politics.
