Brown County Browser: August is Child Support Awareness month

Some facts about Child Support in Minnesota and Brown County:

• The Child Support Program is funded 68% by the federal government, 8% by the state and 24% by the counties.

• Facts & Figures – County and state child support office provide services for custodial and non-custodial parents and their 230,153 children. The mission of the program is to promote the well-being of children and self-sufficiencies of families by delivering quality child support services.

• Demographic information: — Minnesota: More than 230,000 children served; Brown County: More than 1,062 children served.

• Paternity for children: – Minnesota: Nearly 147,700 children with open child support cases had paternity established. Brown County: 676 children with open child support cases had paternity established.

• Establishing court orders for support: Minnesota: 187,963 open cases had court orders established – 88.3 percent of open cases. Brown County: 895 open cases had court orders established – 93.23percent of open cases.

• Collections for children: Minnesota: $570.1 million in child support was collected and disbursed of which $431.63 million was ongoing child support. – 75.49 percent of the total support due – giving Minnesota a ranking of third in the country. Brown County: $2.9 million in current, ongoing child support was collected and disbursed – 81.62 percent of the total support due. (Ranking Brown County 7th in the State.)

• Collections on arrears – Minnesota: More than 122,640 cases with arrears or past due support received some arrears payment – 72.4 percent of total cases with arrears – giving Minnesota a ranking of 3rd in the Country. Brown County: 705 cases with arrears or past due support received an arrears payment – 84.36 percent of total cases with arrears. (Ranking Brown County 6th in the State.)

Brown County holds high rankings in the State because of the knowledgeable staff and great working relationships with the County Attorney’s office, Court administration, and the Courts.
