Barbara Joan Filzen

NEW ULM — Barbara Joan Filzen, age 86, of New Ulm died Sunday, September 19, 2021, at her home in New Ulm.

Funeral Service will be held at 1 pm on Monday, September 27, 2021 at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – North Chapel, with Pastor Timothy Anderson officiating. Inurnment will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery Columbarium.

Visitation will be from 11am-1pm on Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – North Chapel.

Barbara is survived by her son, James (Margie) Zeitz of Menomonie, WI; daughters, JoAnn (Malcolm) Spiegeler of Hinesville, GA and Linda (Stan) Williams of Jordan; sister-in-law, Jane Walkush; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Walkush and Olive Mae Singleton; her step mother, Dora Walkush; and her brother, Bob Walkush.

Barbara Joan Walkush was born on February 16, 1935, in Fargo, ND to Ralph and Olive Mae Walkush. Barb was blessed with three children. Barb waitressed at the New Ulm Café and Ebert’s Chalet. She worked at 3M for over 30 years and still found time to sell Avon, on the side. Barb always enjoyed going to flea markets, doing jigsaw puzzles, and owls. Over the years, she collected hundreds of Owl figurines.

She loved decorating her home for the seasons. Barb was a member of the New Ulm Gem and Mineral Club, collecting fossils, agates, and petrified wood for displays at shows and the county fair. Barb always liked country music, which led her to attend the Country Fest in Wisconsin annually and some other concerts. More than anything, she cherished her family. She was very loved and will be missed by so many. Blessed be her memory.
