George Frank Wiedl

NEW ULM — George Frank Wiedl, known to friends as Chief, died unexpectedly at his home in New Ulm on July 20, 2021. Born in New Ulm, MN on May 2, 1926 to Albert and Katherine (Groebner) Wiedl, he was 95 at the time of his death. George was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. He attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from New Ulm Public High School in 1944. Chief grew up in New Ulm’s Goosetown and enjoyed sharing memories of his childhood there. Chief worked for Great Northern Railroad until he was drafted in 1945. He served in the US Army until June, 1947. He worked for Forster Furniture and then for the US Postal Service for over 31 years. George married Leatrice Drill on July 14, 1951. The couple resided in New Ulm and had two daughters, Connie and Pam. Chief loved hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and outdoor activities. He also enjoyed gambling. Chief played cribbage and poker in his younger years and in his later years, frequented the casino. Chief was a sports fan and “coached” the Twins, Vikings, & Gophers from his living room. He enjoyed making people laugh and had a great sense of humor. George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Leatrice, daughter Pam, mother and father in law, John & Adella (Kiecker) Drill, son in law, Andy Leland, brothers and sisters Alfred Wiedl, Joseph Wiedl, Eleanor (Tuddy) Wills, Hilda Clyne, Florence Fredrich, Charles Wiedl, and Albert Wiedl Jr., and in laws, Lorene Hulsey, Clara Wiedl, Esther Wiedl, Melvin (Shorty) Wills, Willy Clyne, Harold Fredrich, Bonnie Wiedl, Ann Wiedl, and Les Bode. He is survived by his daughter, Connie Leland of Mankato, sister in law Lenora Bode, as well as nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday July 27, 2021 at the Wiedl family burial plot in the New Ulm City Cemetery with Father Jerry Meidl officiating the service.
