Roger L. Sherman

FRANKLIN — Roger L. Sherman, age 90, of Franklin, MN, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2021, at River Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Redwood Falls, MN.

Private Family Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Franklin with Pastor Lowell Krogstad officiating. Interment in The Franklin Cemetery in Franklin.

Public Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Franklin. Military Honors by the Franklin and Fairfax Honor Guard.

Roger Lynn Sherman was born on January 14, 1931, in Franklin, MN. He was the son of Lynn and Bonita (Johnson) Sherman. Roger was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in his faith as a youth at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Franklin. He received his elementary education at Camp District 1 and then attended Franklin High School. Roger graduated with the Franklin High School class of 1950.

Roger entered active military service in the United States Army on August 25, 1954, at the age of 23 and completed his basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. After basic training, he was flown to France where he served as an instructor at the Army’s pipeline school. Roger served his country during the Korean War. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 7, 1962, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and achieved the rank of PFC.

On November 26, 1960, Roger was united in marriage to Jean Robertson at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Franklin. After their marriage, the couple lived for a short time in Franklin. In 1961, they moved to their farm in Camp Township, Renville County. Roger and Jean were blessed with two sons, Scott and Samuel. They shared 47 years of marriage until Jean passed away on November 13, 2008.

Roger was a lifelong farmer. He farmed corn, soybeans, and grain along with raising beef cattle and raising hogs. For many years, Roger was also employed as a seed salesman. Roger retired in 1993. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Franklin where he was actively involved. In his younger years, Roger volunteered with Boy Scouts. Roger was a member of the Franklin American Legion Post 308, where he served as Commander for 10 years.

Roger enjoyed woodworking and welding. He used his skills and built many things that he needed for the farm. Roger was a good helper to his sons along with being a good teacher and teaching them lifelong skills. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Roger is survived by his sons, Scott Sherman of Rapid City, SD, and Samuel Sherman and his wife, Sylvia of Franklin, MN; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia Sather and her husband, David of Franklin, MN, Mary Lou Lee and her husband, Roger of Franklin, MN; sister-in-law, Joan Robertson of Watertown, MN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Bonita Sherman; wife, Jean Sherman; sisters-in-law, Jane Lund and her husband, Roger and June Lehman and her husband, Ervin.
