NEW ULM — Wilbert “Wil” Elmer Burdorf, age 79 of New Ulm died peacefully with his family by his side at his home in New Ulm on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Pastor Grant Bode will officiate, and burial will follow in the Soldier’s Rest Section of the New Ulm City Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 9-11 am on Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Due to seating limitations, the funeral service will be livestreamed through the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home’s Facebook page starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes of New Ulm are assisting the family with arrangements.

Wil is survived by his wife, Cathy Burdorf of New Ulm; his daughters, Pat Burdorf of Carver, Pam (Randy) Borka of Carver, Candy Hjerpe of New Ulm; his sons, Duane (Edna) Burdorf of Odessa, Texas, Dean Burdorf of New Ulm; his 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Norma (Fred) Scott of San Antonio, Texas, Lois Budach of St. Paul, Lorraine Huitt of Glencoe, Irma (Jim) Beebe of Naugatuck, Connecticut; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Scott Fahrenkamp; his sister, Esther Trebelhorn, and his brothers, Arnold Burdorf, and Wilmer Dammann.

Wilbert “Wil” Elmer Burdorf was born July 6, 1941, in Hamburg, Minnesota to Paul and Helen (Albers) Burdorf. He was a 1959 graduate from Glencoe High School. Soon after graduation, Wil entered the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for 8 years. Wil took a 7-year break from the military, but later joined the Minnesota National Guard where he served for an additional 21 years, and 4 years in the Inactive Ready Reserves. During his long military career, Wil was awarded 16 medals, and retired as E-9 (CMSgt). During this time, Wil also worked a dedicated 25 Ω with Kraft Foods of New Ulm before his retirement in April of 1999. Wil was united in marriage to Catherine “Cath” Pfeiffer at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Dec. 24, 1977. As an active member of his community and country, Wil served on numerous positions throughout his life. He was the Post Commander of the VFW Post 1648 in New Ulm. He also held this position 13 other times. He was the 2nd District Commander as well as the Post Commander of the American Legion Post 132 in New Ulm. In the District level, Wil served as District Vice Commander and held numerous other jobs with the District. Wil gave back to his community where he was a member of the Lions Club of New Ulm, the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard, Brown County Veterans Council, retired DAV Van Driver, retired American Legion Baseball Committee member, National Guard Citizens Committee, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Citizen Committee, 2013 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award from Brown County, Minnesota National Guard Court of Honor nominee in 2015, Meals on Wheels delivery person, nominee for the Jefferson Good People Award in 2013, as well as a dedicated member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Besides all of his work and giving he did in his life, what brought him the most pride was his family he helped build with his wife Cathy. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Blessed be his memory.
