Thomas Brunner

Thomas Brunner, age 87, of Mahnomen, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, at his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Thomas George Brunner, the son of Ervin and Bertha (Scheurich) Brunner, was born on September 17, 1933, in West Newton township, near Gibbon. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. As a young man, Tom began working with his father on the farm. He met the love of his life, Rose Ann Jackson, and the couple was united in marriage on Jan. 28, 1954, at the Church of St. Willibrord. They made their home in Gibbon and started a family. In 1961, Tom had an opportunity to purchase land near Mahnomen. He moved, along with Rose, their young sons, and his father and mother to a farm east of Beulieu. As they lovingly raised their seven children, he and Rose farmed grains and raised hogs for many years. In 1999, Tom retired, and they built a new house together in Beaulieu. Tragically, they lost their home to a fire in 2012, following which they relocated into town.

Although most of Tom’s life revolved around farming, he was also an accomplished woodworker. He spent many hours making furniture and beautiful pieces of art, most of which he gave away to family and friends. In his spare time, Tom was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, especially big game out West. He made wonderful memories with family and shared many precious stories with his children and grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife, Rose of Mahnomen; one daughter, Lesa (Brent) Brunner of Mahnomen; five sons: Rick (Judi) of Park Rapids, Matt (Sheri) of Fargo, ND, David (Mary Jo) of Detroit Lakes, Alan (Gwen) of Mahnomen, and Phillip (Peggy) of Waubun; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Tony; parents; his sister, Maxine (Stanley) Goblirsch; two great-grandsons; and three nephews.

A Memorial Mass was held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Beaulieu.
