Dawn Denise Garland

NEW ULM — Dawn Denise Garland, age 63 of New Ulm died unexpectedly of natural causes on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at her home in New Ulm.

A private family service will be held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Pastor Timothy Smith will officiate, and burial will take place at a later date.

Dawn is survived by her husband, Robert Garland of New Ulm; her daughters, Bobbi Fuhr of New Ulm, Afton Martens of Minneapolis; her sons, Michael (Marcy) Enger of New Ulm, Jesse Enger of New Ulm; her step son, Jeff (Savannah Hess) Garland of New Ulm; her 7 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren; her father, Curt Archerd of Madelia; her sisters, Kim (Mark) Koser of Eleva, Wisconsin, Bonnie (Roger) Grochow of New Ulm, Shelly Nunnenkamp of Oregon, Becky Archerd of Minneapolis, Mandy (Kevin) Dirksen of Fairmont, Rani Archerd of New Ulm; her brother, Kyle Larson of New Ulm; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Sturm; her step-father, Lyle Larson; her step-mother, Lois Archerd; brothers, DuWayne “Mikie” Larson, Derek Archerd; and step-son, Christopher Garland.

Dawn Denise Archerd was born on March 25, 1957, in New Ulm to Curt and Betty (Vorwerk) Archerd. She was a 1977 graduate from New Ulm Public High School. Dawn was united in marriage to Robert Enger in 1975. They were blessed with four children whom together they raised in New Ulm. The couple later divorced. Dawn later married Robert Garland in 2005 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and enjoyed living their retirement together in New Ulm. Early in her working career, Dawn worked factory jobs at local businesses such as QMC, Tachronics, and Windings. In her retirement, she ran the kitchen at K-Mart, and later worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart. Besides her work there were a variety of things that brought her joy in life. She enjoyed shopping for deals with her friends at local yard sales, tending to her beautiful plants and landscaping in her yard, and also dearly enjoyed the company of her dogs, cats, and birds. Dawn was a devoted and dedicated member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm where she was active in bible study class. What brought Dawn the greatest joy in life was her family. She dearly loved spending time with her children, and loved to see her grandchildren grow. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Blessed be her memory.
