Laurie Marie Haas was born May 5, 1954 in New Ulm to LeRoy and Violet (Fischer) Haas, the third of eight children. She attended Holy Trinity Grade School and graduated from New Ulm High School in 1972. Laurie was united in marriage to Joseph Matter on June 14, 1986 in New Ulm, where they made their home and raised their two sons. She began her career at Union Hospital while in high school. Laurie also worked as a bartender at Archies Bar, seasonally at Del Monte, H&R Block, and B.F. Goodrich. She then began her 24-year employment at 3M in New Ulm. Due to her health, she retired in 2012.

Laurie loved the outdoors, camping, family vacations, playing volleyball and softball, watching the Vikings and Twins, and tending to her many indoor plants. She was always willing to help others in need and helped care for her parents in the years before they passed. Laurie was a good mom and a proud and caring grandmother. Her journey on Earth was far too short and she will be missed by all who knew her.
