Joan is survived by husband, Ron Peterson of New Ulm; son, Daniel (Alicia) Peterson of Barnum, Minnesota; grandson, Albert Peterson; brother, David (Helen) Ramnes of International Falls, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Charlene “Charlie” Ramnes of Sarasota, Florida; and her loving nieces and nephews.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Roger; and brother, Lyle Ramnes.

Joan was born on May 17, 1941, in Spencer, Iowa to Albert and Arlyne Ramnes. She graduated from Sherburn High School in 1959 and worked in Fairmont, Minnesota until marrying her high school sweetheart, Ron Peterson, in December 1962. They lived in Norfolk, Virginia, while Ron served in the U.S. Navy. After he was discharged in 1964, they made their home in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Over the years she worked at Montgomery Ward, at New Ulm School District as a Paraprofessional, and for 26 years at Time Warner Cable, before she retired in 2002. She enjoyed the family dogs, working in her garden, and spending time with friends, whether it was over coffee or across a yoga mat.

Joan was deeply involved in her community. From selling cheese curds at Oktoberfest for the Optimist Club to volunteering at the Brown County Historical Society Museum or the Visitor Center for the Chamber of Commerce, she was constantly lending a hand. She and Ron were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm, where Joan’s family were charter members.

Family meant the world to her. She was a devoted mother to their son Daniel and a doting grandmother to Albert. She loved exploring her Norwegian heritage, and they took two trips to Norway after retirement to sightsee and meet her relatives in person.

Memorials may be sent to the Brown County Historical Society or ISJ Cancer Center.
