Eugene “Gene” J. Altmann Jr

NEW ULM — Eugene “Gene” J. Altmann Jr, age 86, of New Ulm, died Friday, May 08, 2020 at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.

Due to the current social restraints, a private family service will be held at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

The service will be live streamed starting at 11 am on Tuesday on the Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes Facebook page.

Gene is survived by his wife, Marion; daughters, Barb (Ross) Nelson of New Ulm, Karen Altmann of Montgomery, and Beth (Tom) Rewitzer of New Ulm; sons, Steve (Sue) of Eagan, Brad (friend Lisa Langer) of New Ulm, and Bob (Terry) of LeSeur; sister, Margie Willer of S. St. Paul; brother, Thomas (Angie) of New Ulm; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great -grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Ryan Nelson; granddaughter, Jenna Langer Vancura; great-grandson, Dominik Walters; brother, James; and brothers-in-law, Don “Whitey” Willer and Asta (Jonee) Reinarts.

Eugene Joseph Altmann, Jr. was born on November 7, 1933 in New Ulm to Eugene & Bertha (Reimer) Altmann. Gene graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1951 He was united in marriage to Marion Bentzin on June 18, 1955 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Gene was employed at Kraft Foods and the New Ulm Building Center. He later owned and operated Gene’s Kitchens Designs until 1988. Gene enjoyed deer hunting with his boys, attending his children and grandchildren’s functions and school activities, and getting together with his family. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Knights of Columbus, and the National Rifle Association. Blessed be his memory.
