NEW ULM — Mary Lou (Colton) Day, age 90 of New Ulm, passed away due to heart failure on April 7, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Home in Winthrop.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 25 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel in New Ulm with burial at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont.

Mary Lou (Colton) Day was born on July 23, 1929 in Winnebago to George and Mabel (Sage) Colton. Mary Lou had six siblings: Flora, Hazel, Stanley, Lina, Daniel and William. Growing up, Mary Lou lived in Southern Minnesota on the farm and in town and also lived in Seattle, Washington with her mother, Mabel and Aunt Lillian.

While working as a telephone operator in Fairmont, Mary Lou was introduced by her co-worker, Dolores Day, to Richard Day. Mary Lou and Richard were married November 23, 1952 at the First Congregation Church in Fairmont. When they first married, they lived on a farm north of Fairmont and started a family with their first four children. They then moved to a farm in Welcome and one more child was added to their family. In winter 1971/72, they moved to Sherburn where they lived until 2008 when Richard moved to the Good Samaritan Home (Winthrop) and Mary Lou moved to Ridgeway Assisted Living on 23rd (New Ulm).

Mary Lou worked as a telephone operator, in various restaurants including Etters Supper Club, as a caregiver at Friendship Haven, and even sold Avon and Watkins. Her passions in life were crocheting, rug making, bell ringing choir and selling her flea market finds. Mary Lou enjoyed going to flea markets, auctions and rummage sales, time with her kids and grandkids, and of course, playing bingo, one of her favorite pastimes! Mary Lou celebrated her 90th birthday on July 23, 2019, with family and friends, which included a bingo theme cake.

Mary Lou is survived by her five children: William Day (Corinne) of New Ulm, Dr./Rev. Rebecca Day-Swain (Elijah) of North Las Vegas, NV, Pamela Wester (Robert – Deceased) of New Ulm, Bryan Day (Panatda) of Bakersfield, CA and Christine Binder (Allan) of St George; Her grandchildren, David, Bryan Jr., Alex, Ben,Teresa, Sara, Brittany (Bubba), and Colton; great-grandchildren, Nadia, Dominic, Dale, Haley, Dustin, Noah and Jessa; and two sister in-laws, Marge Colton and Donna Schaefer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband: Richard; her parents: Mabel and George Colton; siblings: Flora, Hazel (Larson), Stanley, Lina (Fritz Frisbie), Daniel and William; sister-in-laws: Alice Colton, Gladys Colton and Dolores Theobald: and brother-in-laws: Edwin Larson, Harold Fritz, William Schaefer and Lucian Theobald.
