Marie Elizabeth Hillesheim

NEW ULM — Marie Elizabeth Hillesheim, age 99, of New Ulm passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel in New Ulm.

A private family committal service will be held on Wednesday at the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in May to celebrate Marie’s 100th birthday.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Anne Wager of Bloomington; her son, Tom Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye; her sisters, Joyce Hofmeister of Marble, Carol (Jim) Glaser of Bettendorf, Iowa, Gloria (Dick) Scheid of New Ulm; her brother, Ohmar (Marie Brandel) Schugel; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Hillesheim in 1962; son, Louis Hillesheim in 1974; her sisters, Dorothy Breu, Virginia Prahl, Rosemary Mees; and her brother, Melvin Schugel.

Marie Elizabeth Schugel, daughter of John Q. and Anna (Schaefer) Schugel was born on May 14, 1920, in a log house in Cottonwood Township, Brown County. She went to country school through the 8th grade. Marie was united in marriage to Robert H. Hillesheim on October 21, 1941, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. The couple made their home in Sigel Township on a farm. Robert died January 24, 1962. After his death, Marie continued to live and work the family farm and farm with her children until she moved to New Ulm in 2005. Besides her work on the farm, Marie loved working with her hands sewing and crocheting many gifts for her family and friends. In the past, she dearly loved spending time outdoors fishing and horse-back riding. To socialize Marie always enjoyed a good card game with friends, or going to ball games with her family. Marie was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Christian Mothers Society. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her. Blessed be her memory.
