Thomas “Sarge” Schaefer

NEW ULM — Thomas “Sarge” Schaefer, age 71, of rural New Ulm passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Father Gerald Meidl will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. Visitation will continue from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Rosie Schaefer; son, John Schaefer of New Ulm; daughter, Julie (Tharon) Young of Sauk Centre; his grandchildren, Austin and Samantha Schaefer and Taylor and Paige Young; siblings, Lois (Larry) Seibel of New Ulm, Donna (Gary) Gieseke of New Ulm, Steve (Jeanne) Schaefer of New Ulm, Ruth (Phil) Burr of Eau Claire, WI, Phyllis (Gary) Domeier of New Ulm, and Ken (Heidi) Schaefer of North Tustin, CA and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Agnes of New Ulm.

Thomas J. Schaefer was born Feb. 5, 1948, in New Ulm to Leonard and Agnes (Landsteiner) Schaefer. He attended Catholic elementary and high school, graduating from Cathedral in 1966. Then, he attended Mankato Vo-Tech where he completed the Tool and Die Program. He entered the U.S. Army in 1969, where Tom served in Vietnam from May 1969 to April 1971. Later in life, Tom was united in marriage to Rosie (Sellner) Schaefer on May 6, 2006.

All his life Tom enjoyed being a metal fabricator, first as a mechanic at Kraft, and then for most of his career as a Tool and Die Maker at 3M in New Ulm. He also ran a Scorpion snowmobile dealership for many years. He belonged to the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club, competed in many dirt bike trials, won many drag races with his customized Honda, and served as Township Supervisor for Linden Township. He will be dearly missed by those that knew him. Blessed be his memory.
