Gloria (Matter) Utz was born to Erwin and Martha (Pfarr) Matter on March 18, 1952. Growing up on a farm Northwest of Springfield as one of 16 children, she did not lack fun and adventure. A few of those adventures included sneaking kittens into country school, hiding from the Nuns at St. Raphael’s, and playing fort in the grove. She met her husband Richard and they were married on Sept. 30, 1972 and eventually resided on a farm-site south of Springfield. She was a stay-at-home mom to children April and Adam for most of their childhoods. She shared her loved of books and animals with them. A self-proclaimed “homebody,” she preferred to be at home with her animals over anywhere else. In her lifetime she had many beloved pets including countless dogs and cats, horses, birds, a couple of raccoons, and even a fox. She loved her grandsons Kameron and Xander fiercely and made the “uncomfortable” trip to Ohio to be present at both of their births. She loved to read to them and sing to them when they were small, and listen to them sing in recent years. In addition to her family and animals, she loved gardening, bird watching, Country music, dancing, and coffee.

She is survived by her children April (James) Bigelow of Springfield and Adam of Comfrey; grandsons Kameron and Xander; siblings Erwin Jr. “Tony” (Pat) Matter of St. James, Marcella (Ken) Solberg of New Ulm, Donna (LaMonte) Henrichs of Sleepy Eye, Ronald (Karen) Matter of New Ulm, Audrey (Lonny) Evers of New Ulm, Elaine Fromm of Lake Havasu City, AZ, Lawrence “Lars” Matter of College Station, TX, Duane Matter of Comfrey, Marleen (Keith) Nemecek of Winthrop, IA, Marion (James) Lewis of Springfield, Sharyn (Arthur) Sullivan of Springfield, and David Matter of Tracy; and countless nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Richard, parents Erwin and Martha (Pfarr) Matter, and siblings Jean (Pfarr) Bedner, Michael Matter, Joseph Matter, and Alan Matter.
