Francis “Frank” Bernard Burghardt was born July 5, 1931 to John and Esther (Scholz) Burghardt, Sr. in Grand Island, Nebraska. Frank graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1951 in New Ulm and served his country in the National Guard. He served from 1949 to 1965, 2 years active duty from 1950-1952. Following his active duty tour, Frank worked at several automotive jobs in New Ulm, as well as working as a mechanic for the Department of Military Affairs by servicing National Guard vehicles and armor until 1965. Frank then worked at 3M starting as a Shift Mechanic in 1965 until his retirement as a Safety Supervisor in 1994.

Frank was united in marriage to Mary Schuck, on August 29, 1964 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. Frank spent time as a Boy Scout Leader of Troop 25. Many wonderful memories were made taking the Troop to the Boundary Waters. Frank and Mary’s union was blessed with 5 children. While raising their children, Frank and Mary were avid beekeepers and sold honey out of their home. Their children would help extract honey and Frank would pay them in fresh honeycomb. In addition to beekeeping, Frank was an avid enthusiast and local authority on Purple Martins. He built intricate birdhouses for the Purple Martins which utilized a pully system so he could keep logs on their nesting, eggs, and hatching. Frank loved to read and he shared that love with his children and grandchildren. Most of all, Frank treasured spending time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him. Blessed be his memory.
