Herbert Berg

NEW ULM — Herbert Berg, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 20, 2019 at the St. John’s Circle of Care in Springfield.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2019 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Pastor Timothy Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2019 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Herb is survived by his daughters, Debra Berg of New Ulm, Diane Berg of Liberty Lake, Washington; son, David (Sharon) Berg of New Ulm; 6 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Leonard (Shirley) Hale; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Herb was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Grace Lillian Berg (nee Hale); his parents; sisters, Ruth Koelpin and Aletta Berndt; brothers-in-law, Win Koelpin, Ervin Berndt, Eugene Hale, Robert Hale, Robert Thomas; and his sister-in-law, Marie Thomas

Herbert Berg was born April 28, 1929 in Racine, Wisconsin Caledonia Township. His parents were Gustave and Henrietta Berg who farmed the homestead farm on the West River Road that was settled by Herb’s grandfather, Edward Berg in 1847. His mother’s father was the pastor of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Caledonia, Wisconsin. When Herb was born, his grandfather was his pastor and his mother was a Christian day school teacher at Trinity Lutheran School.

Herb was baptized in the faith on May, 1929 by his grandfather, Pastor Frederick Koch and was confirmed in June, 1942 just a few months after his father’s death on March 26, 1942. Herb attended Trinity Lutheran grade school for eight years and then attended the Lutheran High School in Milwaukee for three years and his senior year of high school was at the Racine School of Agriculture and Domestic Economy where he had the blessing of meeting his future wife, Grace.

Herb and Grace were married on September 30, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Caledonia, Wisconsin. He served in the army from 1951 to 1953. After his discharge, Herb and Grace farmed.

Herb was born to be a leader, at the age of 23 Herb served on the Park Board in Caledonia, Wisconsin and was instrumental in starting the Caledonia Volunteer Fire Department in 1953. He also served as the first secretary and then Captain of the Caledonia Rescue Squad for 15 years. Also, at the age of 23, Herb was elected as an Elder and later became president of Trinity Lutheran Church at the age of 25.

In 1960, Herb decided to become a salesman of life insurance for Aid Association for Lutherans which is now Thrivent Financial. He was then offered and accepted the General Agent position for Aid Association for Lutherans, moving the family to New Ulm, MN. Herb retired from AAL in June of 1990 to enjoy their home in Haines City, Florida on the Sun Air County Club golf course until they returned to New Ulm, MN in 2015 to be closer to family.

Herb served faithfully with His Lord and Savior in many capacities – a total of six times as president of four different congregations. He enjoyed serving with ten different pastors as a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran in Caledonia, Wisconsin, St. John’s Lutheran in New Ulm, MN and Peace Lutheran in Kissimmee, Florida and St. Paul’s Lutheran in New Ulm. He was also one of the founding board members of Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School in New Ulm.

Herb’s life was centered on Christ as his Savior. He lived his entire life according to and shared his Christian beliefs, values, and principles with anyone he met. He often said living as a Christian is what allowed him to live a very positive, eventful and happy life.
