Ila Louise Bohlke was born on Feb. 13, 1935 to Ella (Marks) and Edwin Bohlke in Mankato. She was the great-granddaughter of Columbus Ballard, one of the earliest settlers of Blue Earth County. Ila grew up on the Bohlke family farm alongside the Cobb River, was baptized and confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Decoria Township, attended a one-room grade school, and graduated in 1952 from Good Thunder High School. After attending Mankato Commercial College, she worked at Valley News Company.
Ila married Delroy Zimmerman on June 20, 1954 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Decoria Township. They made their home on a farm near Courtland that bordered Swan Lake. Together they raised their daughters Gwen (Frank) Kral, Lois (Gregg) Bode, and Gail Groebner and their sons David (Kim) Zimmerman, Dale Zimmerman, and Lance Zimmerman. She enjoyed Ballard family history and playing cards and Chinese checkers with her 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Ila was a pillar of her family and loved spending as much time with them as possible. She also enjoyed the company of the many cats, dogs, birds, and wildlife she warmly welcomed on her farm. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Delroy in 2001, brothers, Duane in 1995 and Omar in 1964 and a daughter, LouAnn Zimmerman in infancy.
Memorials can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School or donor’s choice.
