Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – SOUTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. Pastor Nathan Scharf will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier’s Rest section.

Visitation will be from 9 – 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – SOUTH CHAPEL.

Joann is survived by her daughters, Holly (Randy) Weikle of Fairfax, Karen Nelson of New Ulm; sons, Kevin (Doreen) Nelson of Austin, Allan Nelson of New Ulm, Daren Nelson of New Ulm; 6 grandchildren, Jessica Krzmarzick, Ryan Weikle, Kara Fluegge, Sean Nelson, Cydney Nelson, Landon Nelson; and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Nelson; her parents; daughter, Shelly Nelson; and her 2 sisters.

Joann O. Schwantes was born June 19, 1936 to Otto and Doris (Oachs) Schwantes at the family farm in Good Thunder. On March 8, 1958, Joann was united in marriage to Clifford “Cliff” Nelson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Good Thunder. They raised six children. Joann lived much of her life in Sleepy Eye, spending 30 years there and working at places like the City CafÈ for 8 and a half years, Hardees for 4 years, and many other restaurants in various locations to support her family. She enjoyed baking, dancing, polkas, vacationing in Park Rapids, socializing, and spending time with family. Joann was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
