ST. PETER — Mary Margaret Bushard Johnson passed away on Nov. 28, 2018 surrounded by friends and family at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.

Mary was born on Jan. 5, 1945 in New Ulm to Walter Bushard and Caroline Zollner Bushard. She spent her early years in Ridgely Township; her family moved to Gibbon in 1953. Mary graduated from Gibbon High School in 1963 and then went on to Mankato State College. She returned to Gibbon to care for her sisters in 1964 following the death of their mother, Caroline.

She became the proud mother of Michelle Marie in 1966. Mary married Steve Johnson in 1974; they later divorced.

Mary lived most of her life in St. Peter where she worked at the Regional Treatment Center for 31 years. During this time, she diligently worked on completing her college degree and teaching certificate, which she earned 2001. She later worked as a teacher at St. Peter Adult Education helping many people earn their GED and learn the English language.

Mary was an avid gardener and enjoyed politics, reading and music. Mary’s home and heart were always open to welcome and care for family and friends.

Mary is survived by step mother, Violet Bushard, daughter, Michelle Stolt (Kevin), Rachel Galles Huffer, Carrie Galles and Jason Galles, sister, Grace Bushard (Tim MacDonell) grandson Steven Stolt (Lauren), nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, great nieces and nephews and many friends especially Bobbie, Pat and Sam.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard and sister Jolene.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, December 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Peter Community Center, 600 S. 5th St, St Peter. Desserts and refreshments will be served.

In lieu of flowers, Mary requested donations to BENCHS or the Andreas Cancer Center.
