Walter “Sonny” Keckeisen

NEW ULM — Walter “Sonny” Keckeisen, age 85, of New Ulm passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the United Church of Christ in New Ulm. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery – Soldiers Rest Section. Full military honors will be provided by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 9:00 – 11:00 am Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the United Church of Christ located at 301 South Minnesota Street in New Ulm.

Walter is survived by his wife, Rita; their children, Jeff (Arla) Keckeisen; Deb (Tim) Blanchard; Dawn Keckeisen; grandchildren, Ryan, Kalli and Camille ; sisters, Jacky Hinton and Kathy (Frank) Durkot and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Eva and Walter; brother Joel Keckeisen; sisters, Elizabeth Groebner, Gert Jondall; sister-in-law, Donna Keckeisen and brother-in-law, William Hinton.

Walter R. Keckeisen was born December 18, 1932 in New Ulm to Walter and Eva (Cooney) Keckeisen. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1951. He joined the United States Army in 1953. He served 2 years. On September 13, 1958 he married Rita Herschman in New Ulm at Friedens church. He worked at Hauenstein’s Brewery from 1955 – 1970 and he worked as a custodian at New Ulm Junior High for over 27 years. He was a life time member of the New Ulm area DAV, VFW, a member of the American Legion and a U.C.C. volunteer. He enjoyed watching Minnesota Sports but above all else he loved spending time with his family.
