Selmer “Sam” Erickson

SLEEPY EYE — Selmer “Sam” Erickson, age 73, of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota died on Oct. 8, 2017, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 4 to 7 pm at the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye Chapel and will continue on Thursday from 7:30 until 10 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home.

Service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church-Sleepy Eye, on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 10:30 am.

The clergy will be Father Andy Michels. Interment will be at Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Military honors will be provided by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.

Selmer “Sam” Erickson was born in Estherville, IA on Oct. 18, 1943. He graduated from Ceylon High School in 1961 and then entered the Air Force, serving primarily in Germany. Upon discharge he enrolled in the lineman program at the Jackson Vocational School. After graduating he worked as a construction lineman. In 1967 he went to work for Federated REA in Jackson. In 1968 he married Margaret (Tauer) Erickson in Jackson. He worked at Federated REA until 1986 when he left to become the line superintendent at Brown County REA in Sleepy Eye. He retired from BCREA in 2007. During his retirement he enjoyed volunteering with Let’s Go Fishing and Heartland Express. One of his favorite activities was hauling grain and helping with fall harvest at his daughter and son-in-law’s farm. He served the community of Jackson as a City Councilman and as a member of the Jackson Legion Post, serving as an officer for a period of time. He served the Sleepy Eye Community as a member of the Sleepy Eye School Board. He was a member of both the Jackson and Sleepy Eye Lions Club. He was happiest spending time at his grandchildren’s activities and when he was gathering with his extended family. He loved to travel and spent his retirement traveling all over the United States. He will be deeply missed. His was a life well-lived.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Tauer) Erickson; children, Tracey (Scott) Morris from St. Michael, and their children, Shawn Morris (fiancée Carli Wojick) and Shane Morris, Kathy (Robert) Goblirsch and their children, Eric Goblirsch and special friend Emily Vogel, Lyndsey Goblirsch and Kyle Goblirsch, siblings, Renee (Dan) St. John, Sylvia (Don) Moore, Maureen (Loren) Blilie, Dave (Jan) Erickson, DeWayne (Ruth) Herbrandson, Karen Erickson, Judy (Dave) Schmitz, Patsy (John) Bode, Ellen (John) Peterson, Kathy (Marty) Bremer, Kermit (Marlene) Erickson, in-laws, Rose(Ed) Oldakowski, Charlie (Vicki) Tauer, George (Heidi) Tauer, Richard (Linda) Tauer, Barb (Steve) Canham and many beloved nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley R. and Marie (Carlson) Erickson and DeEtta (Herbrandson) Erickson and his brothers, Allan and Carlton in infancy, Merlin Erickson, Edward Erickson and Jim Herbrandson.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be sent to the Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester, MN or “Let’s Go Fishing”.
