Thomas L. Furth

SAN DIEGO — Thomas L. Furth, (1938-2017), of San Diego, formerly of New Ulm, son of Theodore and Eleanor Henle Furth, died suddenly at Carmel Mountain Rehab Center in San Diego, on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 where he was recuperating from surgery.

A graveside service will be held on 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017 in front of the chapel of the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.

Thomas L. Furth was born Dec. 18, 1938 in New Ulm to Theodore and Eleanor (Henle) Furth. He was a 1956 graduate of Holy Trinity High School, where he was active in sports and theatre productions. Tom graduated from Mankato State University. After college, Tom served in the U.S. Army. Although he lived in California for the past 40 plus years, Tom was deeply devoted to his many nephews and nieces, as well as to former classmates, many with whom he was in contact until his death. A lifelong supporter of his favorite Minnesota sports teams, he constantly sought out fellow Minnesotans in San Diego.

Most of Tom’s life centered on his avid interest in the theatre, an interest he continued in San Diego with a group called Script-teasers. It was in this circle of actors that he met his wife Dianne, who died of Alzheimer’s in 2015.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Eleanor Furth; his siblings James (Jim) Furth of New Ulm, Marie Furth Miller of Ft. Dodge, IA, and John (Spike) Furth of Lamberton.

Tom is survived by his siblings, Herb Furth of Green Valley, AZ, and Kristin Neufeld of Rochester, New York; as well as many nephews and nieces.

Tom will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, his deep loyalty to Minnesota sports, his lively conversations, and his avid interest in people and politics.
